UPSC CSE: Syllabus at a glance

The UPSC Civil Services Examination is one of the most prestigious and competitive exams in India. It's conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to select candidates for various administrative positions in the Indian Civil Services, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and others. The syllabus for the UPSC Civil Services Examination comprises two stages: the Preliminary Examination (Prelims) and the Main Examination (Mains). Here's a general overview of the syllabus for each stage:

Preliminary Examination (Prelims):

1. General Studies Paper I:

- Current events of national and international importance.

- History of India and the Indian National Movement.

- Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.

- Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.

- Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.

- General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization.

- General Science.

2. General Studies Paper II (CSAT - Civil Services Aptitude Test):

- Comprehension

- Interpersonal skills including communication skills

- Logical reasoning and analytical ability

- Decision-making and problem-solving

- General mental ability

- Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. - Class X level).

Main Examination (Mains):

The Main Examination consists of nine papers, out of which two are qualifying in nature and seven are counted for merit:

1. Paper-A: Indian Language (Qualifying)

- Candidates can choose any one of the Indian languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

- This paper tests candidates' ability to comprehend and write in the selected language.

2. Paper-B: English (Qualifying)

- Candidates have to write an essay and other descriptive papers in English.

3. Essay Paper

- Candidates are required to write essays on multiple topics, which could cover current affairs, philosophical themes, etc.

4. General Studies Paper I

- Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society.

5. General Studies Paper II

- Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations.

6. General Studies Paper III

- Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management.

7. General Studies Paper IV

- Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.

8. Optional Subject - Paper I

- Candidates can choose one optional subject from the list of approved subjects. Each optional subject will have two papers (Paper I and Paper II).

9. Optional Subject - Paper II

Apart from these, there is also a Personality Test (Interview) which carries a weightage of 275 marks.

It's essential for aspirants to have a deep understanding of these subjects and topics, along with effective time management and writing skills, to excel in the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Additionally, staying updated with current affairs and having a holistic approach towards preparation are key factors for success.
